Herat Belouch 330 x 196cm
I just love this piece, woven in 2 halves one half per each migratory camp. i.e. summer and winter, which shows it would have been woven for themselves not the commercial western market.
The belouch rugs are always deep and dark in palate and is typical to use black, deep indigo and aubergine tones. Here they have used chemical not natural dyes as the colours are slightly more vibrant and vying for attention. The weaver would have worked out a size and plan in her head and kept this format for weaving the other half to match as best she could which is an amazing skill to mirror and match.
Her work would have been to weave, cook and tend the sheep.
The rug this size would have been woven to line the base of the yurt after the initial layer of kilims.
The design in this piece is a large stylised repeating flower in the border and repetitive almost tile like geometric motifs in the main field. Still complete this rug has both its kilim ends and the wool has a lovely lustre and sings to the viewer.
