Antique Persian Afshar with the boteh of fertility design
This piece beautifully exemplifies the boteh, or paisley symbol. The design features multiple botehs nested within a larger one, with a single boteh sprawling out from the main design, symbolizing fertility. The weaver might have been celebrating an existing pregnancy or expressing a desire for fertility.
The colour palette is particularly desirable, with an ivory light field flanked by mid-blue guard borders rich with flora and fauna motifs. The main gold border adds a light and appealing touch to the piece. The botehs in the field alternate between deep indigo and lighter coral red, creating a dynamic and engaging visual contrast.
The ends of the rug are complete, with intricate details that initially spaced the warps, showcasing the weaver's meticulous craftsmanship. This rug is simply a great example of traditional weaving artistry.
