For Rex Ray, the joy of making and weaving art was his continuous motivation. As a fine artist based in San
Francisco, Rex Ray worked in a wide range of media, including painting, collage, print works, and photography. Rexs’ work exudes beauty with a subversive edge that stems from an attitude grounded in alternative subculture. His impressive client roster in the music, fashion, entertainment, and design industries, includes David Bowie, The Residents, Bill Graham Presents, DreamWorks, Levi’s, Neiman Marcus, Sony Music, Warner Brothers, and Apple.
During his lifetime Rex Ray generated a prolific body of painting and works on paper. His technique involved a complicated process that combined Xerography, handmade woodblock prints, newsprint, and magazine images into vibrant colour schemes with parabolic forms and abstract patterns. His works reference mid-century modernism, Dada, decorative arts, Fluxus, and Pop Art deployments associated with Andy Warhol and continue to speak to ideas of beauty during eras known for post-modernist and conceptual ideologies.
Rex Rays’ art has become even more accessible having created a fun and sophisticated collection of fabulous hand-woven rugs, silk scarves and now exclusive to The Rug Studio hand-made silk cushions, inspired by the bold colour palette and textures of his artwork.
These limited-edition cushions are made to order, a maximum of 3 can be made from any one scarf. Choose a window seat, 2 bolster cushions or a set of 3. In addition, we also present the scarves onto a stretcher for those who would like their own piece of Rex Ray art.
