Persian Hamadan 297 x 146cm Sold

Unusual in size this rug is from N.W. Iran in the Zagros mountains.
Hamadan rugs are considered cottage or village rugs as they are woven usually in homes for their own domestic market.  Hamadan rugs are usually on a cotton foundation and single wefted using the Turkish or parallel knot.
Here the design is the all over boteh or paisley design filled with flowers and other smaller botehs.  Sometimes when a boteh is bursting out another boteh this is thought to be a fertitility symbol, is that whats happening here?
The dark field helps the motifs to pop and although a repetitive design no 2 botehs will be identical as it would most probably have been woven out of the weavers heads not a graph like the city woven rugs.
The aqua blue border has beautiful abrash (dye bath changes) through out.  This rug has now been fully restored since this image and is ready for high traffic.
