Indian Agra 400 x 339cm
Indian Agra carpets and slightly more ornate in design than the Persian Zieglar their main competitor for luxury room sized carpets.
This piece is from the Jailbird collection and the only production of Agra carpets that are like those originally produced in the late 1800s.
The jailbird collection was part of an exhibition n London in the 1980s when a pair of antique carpet dealers realised the desirability for these stunning large scale designs but their limitation was that they were only available to the extremely wealthy due to their high value for original antique Agras.
One of the pair went to India sourced an old man who had been a weaver from the original production and studied with him the unique weave that Agras has.
They the produced a series of new production Agras which hold their own in value against the mass other reproduced Agras in the market today.
Why Jailbird? It is thought that the rugs and designs of these carpets were woven by the prisoners in Agra, Amritsar and Jaipur. The designs would have migrated as the prisoners moved and hence no design can be fully affiliated as to being Agra etc.
This rug is in a stunning palette of reds, golds and subtle ivory hilites all held in place by the pea green border. Lifts any space.
